#TBT Throwback Thursday: Photography at The VISY Theatre, The Brisbane Powerhouse KERRIN SMITH

One of my favourite shoots of all time: The VISY Theatre at The Brisbane Powerhouse, 2012. I was lucky enough to work on this photo shoot with Matilda Award winner and theatre director, Simone de Haas and the cast from Mixed Company. I have been to the theatre many times, even performing on stage in dance concerts as a child but there is nothing quite like being in a empty theatre when all the stage lights are lit.

I came in to photograph the Mixed Company crew on their dress rehearsal of ‘Secret Bridesmaids’ Business’ and was treated to a virtually private performance with only myself and director, Simone in the audience.

Being able to move around the theatre without the concern of disrupting the audience made this shoot a real treat for me. I am often confined to stairs, the wings or sharp angles on the sides and even the back row at live events. The empty theatre gave me the chance to move freely, get up close without having to crouch and basically having the run of the place.

I did get to see ‘Secret Bridesmaids’ Business’ live the following night for the opening performance which was amazing. I could take in so much more of the story and really get engrossed in the characters. I will be forever grateful to director Simone de Haas, for allowing me to shoot in this iconic location.
